CurrentI have worked for Locus since 2003 (full time 2003-2007 and 2011 to present, and as a part-time contractor 2007-2011 while I was at UNCA). As VP for Data Management and Visualization, I apply innovations in visualization, data science, AI, and block chain to Locus products and processes. I also manage data analytics offerings, build strategies for data archiving, and develop best practices and standards for data visualization. In addition, I manage a team of programmers at Locus tasked with development and implementation of Locus’s EIM application, which lets users manage their environmental data in the cloud using software-as-a-service technology. I am also directly responsible for research and development of Locus’s GIS (geographic information systems) and visualization tools for mapping analytical and subsurface data.
Adjunct Assistant Professor
Taught 'Visualization for Climate Change Information and Decision-Making" during the spring 2011, summer 2017 and spring 2019 semesters, offered through the Climate Change and Society certificate program in the Master of Liberal Arts program. Taught “Introduction to Geographical Information Systems,” an undergraduate-level course offered through the Environmental Sciences department, during fall semester 2010.
Research Scientist
GIS and database programmer for NEMAC (National Environmental Modeling and Analysis I was the product manager for a web application developed with the US Forest Service for use by forest managers to access expected climate change impacts and relevant forest management options. I was also the lead developer for a multi hazard risk tool, which lets planners and hazard mitigation officers determine the geographical extent and potential dollar risk from floods, landslides, wildfire, and other natural hazards. I also served as the project manager for the Southern Appalachian Report Card on Sustainability, a collaboration with the US Forest Service to produce a document rating forest health and sustainability in western North Carolina.
Adjunct Instructor
I was an adjunct instructor for “Introduction to Geographical Information Systems,” an undergraduate-level course taught by Dr. Pierce once or twice a year as requested. The course covered the basics of GIS and GPS use and focused on the ArcView GIS application.
Gis Specialist
I was a lead programmer for the GIS interface for Integrate’s flagship product “TerraBase,” a Microsoft Access based data management system for environmental data from analytical laboratories. I coded functions for display of TerraBase data in the ArcView GIS, along with functions for spatial querying, reporting, and analyzing of TerraBase data
Gis Specialist
I was responsible for the production of several site-specific ArcView and Oracle databases used by the GIS component of the Federal Emergency Management Information System (FEMIS), an emergency management software system developed by the U.S. Army and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Database work required skills in ArcView, Arc/Info, Oracle, and UNIX. I also managed a team of instructors tasked with providing all FEMIS training for external clients, as well as internal training. Responsibilities covered the entire training cycle, from needs-assessment through design, testing, and implementation of training, to training evaluation and administration, as well as running a technical support help desk
