I leverage my 20+ years government relations experience and deep understanding of CMF's research on effective communication between constituents and Congress to advise advocacy professionals and train citizen advocates about proven effective advocacy strategies for communicating and building relationships with policymakers. Since coming to CMF, I have conducted more than 200 advocacy training programs for CMF's Partners, involving nearly that 20,000 "constituent advocates."

Direct Goodwill Industries International's (GII) policy and advocacy positions and actions by developing and implementing proactive policy and advocacy strategies on a range of issues. Topics include employment for people with barriers to the workforce, non-profit governance and ethics, and charitable giving and donations.Work closely with GII’s Vice-President of Public Affairs and Communications and CEO to ensure that GII’s efforts are integrated with, informed by, and supported by the experiences and practices of local Goodwill agencies and professionals.Represent GII on Capitol Hill, to the Administration, and collaborations consisting of other national non-profit organizations and associations.Support GII’s Public Policy Committee, and its Prisoner Reentry Subcommittee.Supervise the members of the Office of Government Affairs and Public Policy.Graduated from Goodwill's Senior Leader Program, a fast-paced, intensive six-month (Oct. 2012-April 2013) learning experience that provides opportunities to enhance the organizational and teamwork skills needed to handle the formidable challenges associated with increasingly complex leadership roles.

Monitored legislative developments at the federal level on issues such as budget and appropriations, the Workforce Investment Act, and Prisoner Reentry.Tracked and provided analysis of state legislative trends that interest Goodwill agencies involved in policy and legislation at the state level. Issues include Prisoner Reentry, E-waste/E-cycling, and donation bins. Product Recalls, and Non-Profit Issues.Provide staff direction and support for Goodwill’s Prisoner Reentry Task Force. Activities include drafting a position statement on Prisoner Reentry that is informed my an ad-hoc drafting committee.Draft issue briefs on issues, including E-waste/E-cycling, that are receiving attention at the federal and state levels. Develop and execute Goodwill’s plans to host a policy and advocacy event for local Goodwill CEO’s and senior staff.

Directed and managed ACTE’s, advocacy efforts, policy development, and policy-related media and research activities.Supervised ACTE’s Public Policy Department staff, which consisted of four individuals.Managed department annual budgets totaling over $350,000.Represented ACTE and communicated policy positions to Congressional and Administration officials, the media, and representatives of other interest groups.Planned and coordinated ACTE’s annual National Policy Seminar, which convened approximately 500 individuals, and policy-related events at ACTE’s Annual Convention.Wrote a regular column, Capitol View, for publication in ACTE’s monthly magazine. Represented NYEC and communicated policy positions to Congressional and Administration officials, the media, and representatives of other interest groups. Awarded the organization’s Star Achievement Award (Oct. 2001) in “recognition of accomplishments far exceeding company expectations.”Informed Catholic Charities USA’s nationwide network of more than 1,400 Catholic Charities agencies by editing, writing for, producing, and distributing more than 400 weekly legislative newsletters, AdvoFax, and all necessary legislative alerts.Communicated Catholic Charities USA’s social policy positions to Congressional and federal officials, and representatives of other interest groups. Analyzed, advocated on, and recommended policy positions on issues including juvenile justice and increasing the minimum wage.Implemented Catholic Charities USA’s first-ever web-based grassroots advocacy tool.
