About Tyler Smith
I received my PhD at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in the lab of Dr. Kristin Koutmou. In my thesis work I investigated fundamentals of the mechanism of translation (protein synthesis) and how mRNA and tRNA sequence and modifications impact ribosome fidelity and efficiency. From my previous work in both academia and industry, I am an experienced and enthusiastic biochemist who loves being involved in the creation, testing, and improvement of new assays. I am proficient in protein biochemistry, cellular and in vitro assays, and nucleic acid processing. Most importantly, I value good team dynamics and good data, becoming a self-motivated individual with a strong work ethic and excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The best way to study, improve, and share science is with an open mind. Together.

Scientist I
At Enumera, we are working on a series of assay and diagnostic tools for Women's Health studies - which use a simple but robust, accurate, and specific platform to detect biomarkers for diseases, genetic disorders, cancer, and more. In my position, I have utilized a combinatorial approach with biochemistry, microbiology, and organic chemistry to develop a versatile, stable, and insensitive surface, or network, for which many of the assays are carried out on. Iterations of hydrogels, polymers, and surfactant/surface deposition have been tested and optimized to allow for compatibility and reproducibility and have given me detailed experience in polymer chemistry. Using my biochemistry background, I have also been involved in improving enzymatic, ligand-binding, affinity, andsequencing assays for QC and omptimization steps of our overall platform(s).Furthermore, I have been a sub-team lead for the past 6 months, supervising a team of 6 scientists and research associates. In this role, I have provided guidance, mentorship, and scientific discussion to maintain clear communication of goals and experiments in efforts of improving integration of multiple facets of our platform.
Phd Candidate
As a PhD candidate, I helped design and optimize an in vitro assay to study the fundamental mechanism of protein synthesis (translation). I utilized this system to reveal the tRNA modifications impact rates of decoding and efficiency of protein synthesis, as well as that they help maintain proper reading frame (which results in the correct protein being synthesized vs mutation).
