During this internship I characterized material properties of thin tungsten films with changing thickness to guide the development of a tungsten composite for use as a structural divertor in a nuclear fusion reactor. I accomplished this by analyzing tensile data and complimenting the tensile data with shear punch testing and the corresponding data analysis. I also developed skills such as scanning electron microscopy, keyence optical microscopy, and mechanical testing.

At ORNL I studied the effects of hydriding on the material properties of zircaloy-4 nuclear fuel cladding. This work is expected to culminate in a paper publication in late 2015. The alteration of the elastic modulus, yield strength, plasticity, and fracture stress with increasing amounts of hydrides has not been well understood. To understand these properties better, ring compression tests with samples of various hydride levels were conducted. I then used finite element analysis to replicate these experiments and extract further information from the force vs. displacement curve produced by the ring compression testing.

Primary research on ion beam control with magnetic quadrupoles and dipoles. Supplemented with control software development in labVIEW to be used in an electromagnetic isotope separator. The software was used to maximize throughput of the isotopes and decrease the start up time of the isotope separator.
