About Tyler Gamvrelis

Interested in space, telecommunications, and embedded software. Immersed in all 3 at Kepler Communications, where I'm helping build the internet for space!I graduated from the University of Toronto (U of T) with a Master's in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2022, with wireless communications as my research area. Prior to that, I completed my undergraduate degree in Engineering Science at U of T in 2020, with my major being Electrical and Computer Engineering.I have been involved in numerous embedded systems projects, most of which were implemented on top of real-time kernels. Examples include the "spine" (actuation and sensing systems) of an autonomous humanoid soccer-playing robot, which competed at the 2018 RoboCup International Competition in Montreal, and the data acquisition and control systems for a microgravity experiment which flew with the NRC in August 2018. I worked with Dr. Menou of the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA) on the 3D modeling of hot Jupiter exoplanets. The model I developed was used by Dr. Menou to study hot Jupiter radius inflation. My responsibilities included:- Simulating a planetary atmosphere under various conditions using the "PLUTO" code- Modelling the planet's atmosphere, magnetic field, etc. using C. Embedded Systems Lead For Humanoid Soccer Robot

I joined this humanoid robotics team shortly after it was formed in May 2017. I played a technical role in nearly every aspect of the embedded systems, and held various leadership roles within the team at large (recruitment, presentations, website content, photographer, video editor, etc).I led a team of 6 in the development of the embedded subsystem between September 2017 and August 2019. In addition to working on high-level design and making key contributions to the software, I also worked on establishing forward-looking development practices including:- A coding standard- A code review process- Unit testing with Google’s framework, including hardware mocking- UML as a tool for high-level design- Doxygen for documentation- GitHub for source control, issue tracking, and basic project management- Extensive tutorials on our GitHub wiki to help onboard new membersOur embedded software ran on STM32 microcontrollers on top of FreeRTOS. It controlled the 18 actuators for the robot, read back from our sensors, and was constantly in communication with various systems on the robot’s on-board computer. To achieve fast refresh rates for control, our design decisions were highly time-conscious, often concerned with how to save a few fractions of a millisecond.

I worked under Dr. M. R. Emami of the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS) to design, implement, and test the next generation of a microcontroller development board. The board featured multiple microcontrollers, user interfaces, memory types, and I/O ports. The major outcome of this project was 120 boards to be used by students as a platform for developing autonomous robots in the 2018 and 2019 AER201 courses. I also delivered a 4-hour interactive lecture to the students at the beginning of the winter 2018 semester, on programming PIC microcontrollers in C.Hardware Development:- Developed a 4-layer printed circuit board with Eagle, including creating a library of 20+ custom parts- Designed SD card, graphical LCD, and PC interface modules, compatible with 3.3 V & 5 V supply- Expanded the available GPIO by allowing the microcontrollers that can be socketed simultaneously to access the most common modules independently- Increased options for inter-microcontroller communication- Various improvements to ease of use and reliability- Created a digital inventory of in-stock components and used Excel to organize component sourcing- Selected, ordered, and packaged components for assemblySoftware Development:- Used the Microchip Library for Applications for a PIC18F2550 bidirectional USB to serial converter - Used C to write PIC libraries for the following: 1. SPI and UART modules (blocking and non-blocking) 2. SD card initialization, erasing, and reading/writing single/multiple blocks 3. ST7735R graphical LCD controller initialization, and drawing rectangles and specific pixels- Developed 20+ sample programs using modular software development practicesDocumentation:- Delivered a 180-page technical report- Delivered a 50-page user manual designed for students- Designed a thorough test protocol
