Although software development was never my expected career after graduating college, I've come to find it is a perfect fit for me. I've always been a very logical thinker and constantly look for ways to do things faster, easier, or more affordably. As a software engineer I'm able to apply these principles along with my growing technological skill set to business needs in order to deliver solutions that are efficient, innovative, and maintainable.My first coding experience was a required C programming course during my freshman year of college while pursuing an industrial engineering degree. Prior to starting the class I had the preconception that coding was just a boring, mind-numbing job that wouldn't be of any interest to me. It took me a good part of the semester to really grasp the syntax, but I found that I actually enjoyed programming. I felt accomplished completing the homework assignments and was able to see the value beyond the classroom. That feeling led me to take an elective course my junior year which introduced me to HTML, PHP, and MySQL programming.While applying for industrial engineering jobs at the end of my senior year, I decided to add a bullet to my resume listing the programming skills I'd acquired. That bullet point led to a company reaching out to me for an interview, which resulted in securing my first professional experience. I quickly transitioned from strictly frontend implementations to backend architecting and development as well. During my time with the company I was given opportunities that allowed me to learn new programming languages and technologies to add to my portfolio.I certainly don't have the typical background of a software engineer, but I believe that is a reason why I'm able to think of unique solutions and effectively incorporate business needs into my designs. Now that I've established myself in the software world I can't picture doing anything else and I'm extremely grateful for the opportunities and decisions that led me here.
