Promoted to Squad Leader before being redeployed in February 2004 to Fallujah and adjacent areas in order to counter a growing insurgency. Was selected to be attached to the Division asset Combined Actions Platoon (CAP) a concept utilized successfully in Vietnam in which we were tasked to embed with a local Iraqi Civil Defense Corps Battalion, live with them, train them, and operate with them. Conducted multiple patrols, raids, ambushes, site security assessments, and snap vehicle searches in support of counter-insurgency efforts during the Fallujah spring offensive. Promoted to Corporal before redeploying to Ramadi Iraq in February 2005 to conduct support and stability operations in the city. Participated in a coordinated effort with adjacent Army units to locate, kill or capture Al Qaeda Iraq Leader Musab Al Zarqawi. Wounded by small arms fire April 3rd, med-evac back to the U.S. in early May, awarded Purple Heart while in Iraq. Responsibilities included maintaining high levels of physical fitness, combat readiness, and weapons proficiency of two 3-man machine gun teams.
