Valencia (Val) Clement is a dynamic Haitian-American artist, scholar, activist, and entrepreneur hailing from the vibrant borough of Queens, New York. At the age of 18, Valencia's exceptional leadership qualities earned her a prestigious Posse Foundation full-tuition scholarship to Vanderbilt University, where she successfully obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from Peabody College.During her undergraduate years, Valencia's commitment to social justice was ignited, coinciding with the rise of the contemporary civil rights movement. Post her B.S '16, she furthered her education by pursuing a Master's in Public Policy (M.P.P) in Higher Education Policy. Notably, she spearheaded the Peabody Coalition for Black Graduates and played a pivotal role in the college’s inaugural Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion office.Since her transformative tenure at Vanderbilt, Valencia has been an influential force in the intersection of art, activism, and scholarship. Her online platform, www.valenciaclement.com, serves as a hub for digital art, social justice blogs, open-access poetry, programming opportunities, and more. Valencia has self-published seven collections of poetry, each delving into the realms of intersectional justice and solidarity. Titles include "Pale. Pa Ale: Speak. Don't leave," "Sonje: Take your medicine, Tell your truth," "Atansyon: The Colonizers have Brown Skin," "Chan Desperans: The Journey to Justice," "Santiman: Embodied & Endarkened Ways of Knowing," “Lanmè: Wisdom of the Waters,” and “Grenn: Cutting to heal. Blooming Free.” Additionally, she showcased her culinary creativity by publishing a vegan cookbook titled “Manje.”Valencia's commitment to community welfare led to the establishment of "Ansanm Mutual Aid," a commendable initiative distributing essential supplies to the unsheltered members of the greater Tempe community, fueled by community donations.In 2022, Valencia successfully completed her doctoral studies at Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University. Her research in Education Policy and Evaluation focused on anti-racism frameworks, curriculum studies, blues aesthetics, and womanist social change theory. The culmination of her academic journey is reflected in her dissertation titled “Methodological Reparations: Queering empirical traditions and curricular approaches to address anti-Black racism, homophobia, and transphobia in education.” Valencia continues to be an inspiring force, using her multifaceted skills to effect positive change at the intersection of education, activism, and artistic expression.
