About Brian French

I perform as the principal trombonist of the Winston-Salem Symphony and have appeared as soloist numerous times, most recently with my section colleagues in Jennifer Higdon’s Low Brass Concerto and in a “pandemic era” performance of Beethoven’s Drei Equali. I am also the principal trombonist of the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra and I previously held principal positions in the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago—the training program of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. I perform regionally with many orchestras, including those of Asheville, Charlotte, and Roanoke, the North Carolina Symphony, and the North Carolina Opera as guest trombonist, tenor tubist, and bass trumpeter. My summer festival experience includes the Bravo! Festival in Vail, Colorado, the Eastern Music Festival in my hometown of Greensboro, North Carolina and the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan. I received both my Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from Northwestern University and count Frank Crisafulli, Jay Friedman, and Arthur Linsner among his primary teachers. I joined the music faculty of Wake Forest University in 2008 having earlier taught at Davidson College.In addition to my performing and teaching duties, I am the Director of Marketing for the Winston-Salem Symphony; I create websites for non-profit performing arts organizations such as the Greensboro Symphony, Greensboro Opera, and Santa Fe Symphony & Chorus; and I “doodle” digital drawings—primarily of musical instruments—for clients which have included Music for a Great Space, Wright State University, North Carolina Double Reed Company, and The Leeds International Piano Competition.

    I perform as the Principal Trombonist of the Winston-Salem Symphony—a position I have held since the 2000/2001 concert season—and have appeared as a soloist on numerous occasions. During my time with the Symphony, I have collaborated with such notable guests as Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Van Cliburn, Joshua Bell, Renée Fleming, James Galway, Chris Botti, Ricky Skaggs, and countless others. As Senior Creative Manager of the Winston-Salem Symphony, I cover all aspects of design and placements across various media and platforms. I have designed, developed, and maintained the Winston-Salem Symphony website since 2009, launching four major redesigns over the past fifteen years, including creating one of the orchestra-world's first mobile-responsive websites, in 2011. I am responsible for the Symphony's social media strategy, content creation and account management across six major outlets, email marketing design and strategy, and graphic design for most print collateral. In March 2020, I used single-camera, archival video footage of the concert immediately preceding the pandemic shutdown, edited and animated it to appear as if it were multi-angle, and created "Camera 1," a social media series that kept Winston-Salem Symphony patrons engaged for the first five months of the pandemic. This series became StagePass, our streaming content platform, engaging professional a videographer with six-angle 4K video, for which I serve as a producer for musical consulting, further editing, and motion titling. The Symphony's initial offering of 13 video products during the 2020-2021 season has continued to this day.

    I became the Principal Trombonist of the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra in 2015 after nearly fifteen years as their first-call substitute trombonist, tenor tubist, and bass trumpeter. With the Symphony, I’ve had the opportunity to perform with such artists as Emanuel Ax, Pinchas Zukerman, and Sting. I have also served on a contract basis as the GSO’s web designer since 2016, taking the site through two major redesigns in that time.
