Production Editor - Metal Hammer Magazine & Prog Magazine
I am responsible for chasing and crafting copy, checking for libel, subbing, fitting, writing captions, flatplanning, liaising with the ads and marketing departments and ensuring the magazine goes to press on time. The role also includes responsibility for the digital editions. I'm in charge of the magazine budget, tallying accounts and sending out POs to freelancers, and I also help co-ordinate the annual Golden Gods award ceremony, an enormous, star-studded event held in London every June. In October 2018 I took on the additional role of Production Editor of Prog magazine. I have been working full time on both titles ever since. I also freelance on the side, subbing pages for a wide variety of bookazines (more than 50 titles to date), on subjects ranging from ancient history to psychology.
Operations Editor - The Official Xbox Magazine & Xbox 360: The Official Xbox Magazine
I worked on Xbox for a couple of years (including its redesign and Quark/InDesign transition), then moved onto Xbox 360 for its launch in 2005. I was responsible for ensuring the magazine ran on time with steady copyflow, subbing all copy in Word and InDesign, approving PDFs and calculating page tallies for post-mortems. In addition to liaising with the editorial, marketing, subscriptions and ads departments, I dealt with the international licensees and FTPed them layouts and assets, and deputised for the editor. I was also the Operations Editor of Xbox Specials, which were produced every eight weeks.
Production Editor/Sub-Editor
Various magazines including Classic Rock, Heat, PC Zone and C&VG
Production Editor - Playnation Magazine (Ps2 Title)
I was responsible for ruthless copy-chasing, managing the editorial team and subbing all the copy in both Word and Quark. I made alterations to layouts, wrote captions, crossheads and standfirsts, PDFed pages and generally ensured the magazine ran on time with a steady copyflow.
Production Editor - Official Dreamcast Magazine
My role on Official Dreamcast was much the same as that on PlayNation, except we used film separations instead of PDFs. This involved collecting all pages for output and sending them to an external repro house for output to film, which I checked on a lightbox before sending to the printers.
Editorial Co-Ordinator - Take A Break Magazine
I constantly juggled up to five issues at a time. Take A Break is a weekly title and at the time it was printed in Germany (in the days before PDFs etc), so being late was never an option, especially with a plane to catch! I subbed copy, corrected layouts, chased pages and had to be aware of the stage of every page for every issue. I altered flatplans, created barcodes and ensured the magazine was running on schedule. I prepared pages for repro, dealt with boards and irises, checked the advertising ratio was sold and organised filler pages. I also calculated lateness, prepared pages for costing and archived/retrieved issues using Retrospect.
Production Assistant - Central Production Department
I was in charge of co-ordinating the advertisements for four weekly titles (Take A Break, Bella, TV Quick, That’s Life), 10 monthly puzzle titles and special projects. I checked film separations for density/screen angles, organised repeat ads and liaised with external repro houses and various printers across Europe. I was also in charge of all the administrative aspects of the Central Production department.
Assistant To Tony Wilson
I assisted with the administrative side to setting up the radio station and canvassed support from industry figures/potential advertisers and sponsors. In addition, I designed press releases for the station using MS Publisher.
