Feng Chen is an urban designer with academic background of landscape architecture. He once worked in several leading design firms internationally including Atkins and AECOM in China. Before Feng came to the US to complete the Urban Design Program at Berkeley, he had accomplished a considerable number of large-scale urban design projects in China and Myanmar. Most projects dealt with precincts of cities regarding inner city transformation and new town development. As a team manager responsible for these projects, Feng used a strong analytical approach and the ability to implement design concepts into planning frameworks and commercial strategies. Feng had received a master degree of landscape architecture in Tongji University of China. This interdisciplinary learning experience made it easier for him to understand the city and its landscape from a perspective different of what is customarily practiced. Through his work he re-activates open space as a key spatial strategy for city design, trying to define and depict the importance of a landscape strategy in urban transformation, may it be triggered by urban extension or even the phenomenon of a shrinking urban fabric. His approach is contextual, working with natural processes related to water, landform, climate and vegetation.
