Research programs involve environmental chemistry and chemical education. Environmental projects are focused on the heavy metal contamination of groundwater. Chemical education projects involved chemistry outreach to secondary schools with a mobile laboratory, developing web-based tutorials and aids for undergraduate chemistry students, and curriculum development in the undergraduate classroom and laboratory. He and his research team have authored 41 publications and one book and have presented 83 papers at national meetings. He has presented 24 invited lectures at national conferences, universities, and workshops. Twelve students have obtained their Ph.D., and five have obtained their M.S. under his direction. Fourteen undergraduate students have performed senior research projects in his laboratory. Research programs involve chemical education and environmental chemistry. He is the Leader of the Integrated Science Curriculum (ISC) and the Curricular Programs of the Academy of Integrated Science (AIS) of the College of Science.Since 1983, he has taught over 12,800 Virginia Tech students in lecture and lab courses.
