Participate in activities in support of the Developmental Testbed Center’s (DTC) new Global Model Test Bed (GMTB) component- development of a Common Community Physics Package (CCPP) initially based on the Global Forecast System (GFS) physics- development of a Physics Testbed that will provide a common methods and infrastructure for testing, evaluation, and diagnostic studies of the CCPP- conducting testing and evaluation of new physics parameterization innovations in collaboration with our partners to support the transition of new developments to operations- community support for the CCPP, the Physics Testbed, and an Interoperable Physics Driver.

- Documented and prepared the transfer of the suite of “process-oriented & evidence-based” diagnostic tools to the Global Model Test Bed (GMTB) for being integrated in the Model Evaluation Tools (MET) verification package- Investigated how the subseasonal variability of the extratropical anticyclonic Rossby wave breaking can im- pact atmospheric circulations, tropical cyclones and the predictability in the warm season on S2S timescale- Evaluated the model skill in representing the African easterly waves (AEWs) in S2S forecasts and inves- tigated the subseasonal predictability of AEWs

- Developed a suite of “physics-oriented” diagnostic tools to evaluate model performances and investigate error sources in NOAA’s and Navy’s operational forecasting systems- Provided scientific guidance on the improvement of NOAA’s and the Navy’s operational forecasting systems- Evaluated model skill in representing the moist convective processes, tropical cyclones, and intraseasonal variability in operational forecasting products (including GEFS)- Identified model deficiencies in physical component, i.e., cumulus parameterization and boundary layer schemes- Verified the cloud structure and distribution in Navy's forecasts against satellite observations using CFMIP Observation Simulator Package (COSP)- Investigated the predictability of tropical cyclones on different timescales using the GEFS reforecast datasets- Tested & evaluated global circulation models and identified the deficiency in cumulus parameterization related to model's difficulty in simulating the summertime intraseasonal variability

- Applied WRF numerical simulations to study the modulation of low-latitude westerly on abnormal evolu- tion of devastating tropical cyclone Nargis (2008) over the Bay of Bengal- Classified the tropical cyclone tracks over the Bay of Bengal and the South China Sea and the associated temporal-spatial characteristics of atmospheric circulation patterns
