About Wendy Bredhold

Experienced leader of successful campaigns to retire coal-burning power plants, build clean energy, and advance climate goals, currently pioneering the National Audubon Society Climate Team's regional transmission work in MISO North. Previously, I was honored to represent the Beyond Coal Campaign, which Politico called “the most extensive, expensive and effective campaign in the Sierra Club’s 123-year history, and maybe the history of the environmental movement.”Over the course of eight years as a Senior Campaign Representative for Beyond Coal (2015-2023), I led teams that worked successfully for the retirement of more than 12,000 MW of climate-disrupting, polluting coal plants in Indiana and Kentucky, including some of the largest and most toxic super polluters in the country. I am well-versed in climate policy and emerging energy technologies, and I have years of experience engaging in regulatory processes on the state and federal levels, including EPA hearings, legislative committee hearings, state regulatory hearings, public hearings such as renewable energy siting/zoning boards, utility proceedings, etc. In my Beyond Coal role, I engaged with social justice organizations, faith groups, and other stakeholders to address economic and racial justice issues related to energy burden and utility rates. I'm committed to principles of equity and justice, and I excel at articulating an inspiring vision and fostering consensus within teams. As the representative for Beyond Coal in major coal states, I was often called upon to speak to local, state, and national media outlets. I worked closely with Jamie Smith Hopkins on her Super Polluters story (superpolluters.com), a collaboration between the Center for Public Integrity, the Weather Channel and USA Today that identified my city as the hub of Super Polluter coal plants in the U.S. I worked with MSNBC’s Jacob Soboroff on his coverage of the Rockport Super Polluter, and was quoted with the likes of Al Gore, Gina McCarthy, and Michael Bloomberg in a USA Today story about the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's sixth assessment report. I have also been quoted in Utility Dive, Inside Climate News, Gizmodo, POWER Magazine, S&P Global, and major outlets in Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky. Before joining Sierra Club, I was a journalist writing for newspapers and magazines, served on the Evansville City Council, worked as a media relations specialist, and taught public relations classes at the University level.
