About Wendy Lu

I am a senior staff editor at The New York Times and a global speaker on disability representation in the media based in New York City. As a freelance national reporter, I cover the intersection of disability, race, politics and culture. I also serve as a board member of the National Center on Disability & Journalism. I've previously judged the NCDJ Katherine Schneider Journalism Award for Excellence in Disability Reporting, and the Asian American Journalism Association's Awards for Excellence in Political Reporting and Written News Reporting.I was named on Forbes 30 Under 30 list for 2022 in the Media division for my efforts to expand disability coverage in the media. I was also the recipient of Columbia Journalism School's First Decade Award and a Disability Futures Fellowship, provided by the Ford Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the United States Artists. In 2020, I was selected as a Knight Visiting Nieman Fellow at Harvard University to develop a curriculum of professional reporting workshops to help newsrooms improve their disability coverage. That same year, I made Diversability's D-30 Disability Impact List, which recognizes leaders in the global disability community.I speak publicly for a wide range of audiences and institutions about disability in the media. Past public appearances include: Columbia University, NYU Abu Dhabi, Verizon Media, Harvard Kennedy School, Princeton University, NYC Mayor's Office of People With Disabilities, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts x Netflix, Asian American International Film Festival and many more.Outside of journalism, I write contemporary middle-grade fiction for children ages 9-12. My debut novel, CASTING APRIL, will published by Knopf Books for Young Readers (under Penguin Random House) in the summer of 2026. My fiction writing has received support from Paragraph NY and the Mendocino Coast Writers Conference, for which I have served as a MG/YA scholarship judge.
