About Wendy Zimmerman

Since participating in a program about genetic and embryological development through the Career Exploration Conference at Cornell University, I have wanted to work with cells and tissues. At the University of Rochester, I discovered my passion for biomedical engineering as it combines multiple scientific and engineering disciplines to solve problems and advance the field of medicine. I am currently pursuing my interests by majoring in biomedical engineering, with a concentration in cell and tissue engineering and a minor in biology.Through my classes at the University of Rochester I have been able to explore my interest in cell and tissue research, while also learning to use programs such as MATLAB, LTSpice, and Solidworks. I have found myself most interested in the research areas of cell therapeutics, tissue disease and regeneration, ultrasound technology, and stem cell technologies. I am seeking opportunities where I can learn more about the current research and technologies in these areas, as well as gain more laboratory experience and form connections with mentors and peers who share my passion for biomedical research. After graduating from the University of Rochester I plan to pursue a PhD in Biomedical Engineering. If you share my passion for learning about the world or interest in biomedical technologies and research please connect with me.

    Research Assistant In Schwarz Lab
University Of Rochester Medical Center Nov 2022 - Apr 2023
I am working in the lab of Dr. Edward M. Schwarz at the Center for Musculoskeletal Research, where I am performing immunohistochemistry stains on tissues from mouse models of rheumatoid arthritis and analyzing them with a fluorescence microscope. The goal of the project is to quantify the pain experienced due to the disease.
  • University Of Rochester
    Biology Teaching Assistant
University Of Rochester Jan 2023 - May 2024
I was a TA for an Introduction to Biology class focused on evolution and ecology. I led recitations in which I facilitate student learning my summarizing lecture material and field conceptual questions, as well as host review sessions, and proctor and grade exams.
  • University Of Rochester
    Organic Chemistry Teaching Assistant
University Of Rochester May 2023 - Dec 2023
I led workshops to review lecture material and guide students through problems in organic chemistry
  • University Of Rochester
    Bme Teaching Assistant
University Of Rochester Jul 2022 - Dec 2022
    Rochester, New York, United States
I led a lab section , in which I facilitated student learning by assisting them with coding assignments and concisely explained the methodology behind the code.
  • Columbia University In The City Of New York
Columbia University And Amazon Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (Sure) Research Fellow
Columbia University In The City Of New York May 2022 - Aug 2022
New York, New York, United States
While attending the Columbia University and Amazon Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program, I worked with PhD candidate Alec Batts in Dr. Elisa Konofagou's Ultrasound Elasticity and Imaging Laboratory on his project using focused ultrasound technology and microbubbles to open the blood-brain barrier and deliver therapeutic drugs to treat Parkinson's Disease. I also conducting an independent project investigating the effects of aging, biological sex, and strain on the acoustical properties on the frontal and parietal regions of murine skulls. Through this program I am:-Practicing intravenous injections through the tail vein.-Performing a FUS procedure using microbubbles to open the blood-brain barrier.-Performing an MRI on a mouse to confirm the opening of the blood-brain barrier after a FUS treatment using gadolinium as a contrast agent.-Sectioning brain tissue using a cryostat along the sagittal plane and stained and mounted on slides. Viewing using an Olympus Microscope.-Imaging slides via a fluorescent microscope.
  • University Of Rochester
    Research Volunteer
University Of Rochester Feb 2021 - May 2022
In February 2021 I was accepted as a research volunteer in Dr. Anne Meyer’s lab, where I worked with a graduate student on a project to create artificial nacre from bacterially produced materials through environmentally friendly and sustainable means. Through this opportunity I have been able to develop my laboratory skills, learn to use common laboratory equipment such as autoclaves, sonicators, and desiccators, and gain a better understanding of the scientific research process. Some of my responsibilities included:-Preparing media and growing bacteria.-Collecting materials produced by the bacteria and making solutions from them.-Contributing to the layering technique process which produced the artificial nacre, approximately halving the time needed to complete the process. -Preparing beakers and slides using specialized cleaning methods to be used in the nacre experiments and chemical calcium carbonate deposition experiments, which I conducted independently.-Collecting chemically deposited calcium carbonate to be turned into a resin and test its mechanical properties.-Testing alternative materials to the slides and genetically transformed bacteria in the nacre experiments.
