Through the Whitman Internship Grant (WIG), I provided assistance to the Blue Mountain Action Council (BMAC) food bank by gleaning "unmarketable" fruits and vegetables from farmers' fields that had already been commercially harvested.Regularly collected non-perishable groceries past there "Sell-By" date in addition to perishable items deemed unmarketable. Effectively communicated with volunteers and distributed food to the food insecure in Walla Walla CountyDeveloped, maintained, and nurtured many relationships with food market employees and local farmers.

Peru

Applied and received the competitive International Whitman Internship Grant (IWIG) to pursue a unpaid internship opportunity at Hoja Nueva, a non-profit organization that implements strategic conservation efforts to preserve the biodiversity and health of the Peruvian Amazon ecosystems.Devised and implemented a scientific permaculture project in a cacao orchid that centered around the concept compatible cropping. The tree species Inga edulis was systemically planted alongside with Theobroma cacao to promote nitrogen fixation and cacao seed pod production.Recorded quantitative and qualitative data on soil health, plant growth, and cacao seed pod production. Additionally recorded GPS coordinates and research methodology to map Hoja Nueva's orchard and create a project guide for the continuation of compatible cropping on-site.
