Researcher in ancient DNA, using computational bioinformatic tools to assess DNA damage in museum specimens.

• Entitled 'Temporal patterns of DNA degradation: assessing an ancient human DNAdataset.' for which I received a Distinction (90%).• For the duration of the project I was a part of Professor Ian Barnes lab at the Natural History Museum London and gained experience working in a research lab. • The project culminated in a full scientific report, presentation and viva voce with external examiners.• Throughout this bioinformatics-based project, I quickly and independently gained computational skills including working in a command-line shell environment (Bash), working on remote servers, implementing new software packages and further developing my skills in R Studio and statistical analysis.

• Entitled “Investigation and characterisation of endogenous viral elements within mammal genomes” for which I received a 2:1.• Identified 17 novel sequences in mammalian genomes with significant homology to non-retroviral viral sequences.• Homology was determined through the use of BLASTn and tBLASTn.• Also attempted to increase the efficiency of identifying endogenous viral elements through the construction of a general ‘optimized’ probe.

Silwood Park

• Internship under the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme. • I worked in Dr Martin Brazeau’s lab, helping to develop new software for constructing phylogenomic trees. My main duty was analysing contradictions with outputs from older software (MrBayes, PAUP*) in RStudio, including creating a markdown file of my method to aid future work. • Experience using Materialise Mimics software to create and analyse 3D models of encased fossils.
