Hi, I'm Will, a medium-sized pile of diplomas in a trench coat. I serve as the Director of the Open Knowledge Center at N.C. State University, an instructor at UNC Chapel Hill, and a Senior Policy Fellow at American University's Washington College of Law. I support scholars, educators, and others at academic institutions as they work to make their resources and practices more open, inclusive, and accessible for the public. I also conduct research and develop programs that support open knowledge practices globally, hosting workshops and seminars from Ontario to Abu Dhabi. My current research on harmonizing copyright literacy in open knowledge communities is generously supported by the IMLS, the Hewlett Foundation, and LYRASIS. In 2023 I had the opportunity to conduct research on copyright literacies in European open science communities as a Fulbright Schuman Innovation Fellow, with a home base in Amsterdam and field work in Germany, France, the UK and Ireland. I'm excited to bring this work back to the States and keep using my expertise in information policy to help lead education and scholarship into a more open future.
