I have worked with animals employed in research and education for over 3 decades. Following my education in Baton Rouge, I enjoyed 5 years at the four VA Medical Centers in the greater Chicago area. The experience gained was enormous; as one metric, I hosted four AAALAC site visits within a 15-month period, an exercise that would have required over 12 years at a single institution. In 2017, I completed a 17-year tenure at the University of Louisville, a period which witnessed unprecedented growth in its animal care and use program, with a near tripling expansion of centrally-directed animal facilities from approximately 35,000 ft2 to over 107,000 ft2 and over 400% increase in average daily animal census. During this period, the program enjoyed few non-compliant items (administrative) in inspections by the USDA, and AAALAC Site Visits yielding Continued Full Accreditation with no additional suggestions for improvement following Council review. My team and collaborators were successful in securing over $38 million in federal facility support. Since 1999, much of my "extracurricular" efforts have been devoted to AAALAC International, which provided an opportunity to perform comprehensive reviews of well over 100 domestic and foreign institutional animal care and use programs, including in both academia and private industry. I have served and Chaired numerous Council Committees or Task Forces, mentored several new Council members, and presented or served as faculty for many seminars/panel discussions, workshops, and orientation sessions. Six of my 12-year tenure on the Council included terms as elected leadership, including two years as President. I have served as a Council Emeritus since 2016.In January 2018, I relocated to Ann Arbor where I now serve at the Attending Veterinarian for the University of Michigan and Executive Director for the Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine. In 2022, I was promoted from Assistant to Associate Vice President, Animal Care and Use Program, providing administrative oversight of the animal welfare, biological security, and controlled substances in research compliance programs.
