Engineered mechanisms of tolerance in gram-negative bacteria to improve survivability in toxic environments with the ultimate goal of improving biofuel production yields. Constructed strains of E. coli harboring one or more specially constructed plasmids containing various efflux pump genes that had previously demonstrated increased solvent tolerance. Developed corresponding mathematical models incorporating growth of biomass, toxicity due to solvents, and export of harmful compounds via efflux pumps. Results indicated that certain combinations of efflux pumps can improve survivability of E. coli in biofuel rich environments more so than increased activity of an individual pump.

Middle River, Maryland

This position was at the Middle River Aircraft Systems facility in Middle River, Maryland. I worked diligently to improve efficiency and accountability of receiving inspection department. Worked closely with inspectors to streamline their inspection process and communication with other departments. Performed data collection and statistical analysis as part of the preliminary investigation of variation of perforation hole sizes in an automated drilling process. Worked on data collection and presentation of facility-wide posters to promote awareness and tracking of quality issues in specific departments.

This position was also at the Middle River aircraft Systems facility. In this role I helped to organize and implement a more efficient system for recycling and waste removal. I also coordinated the removal of several asbestos contaminated pieces of machinery as well as a large quantity of electronic waste. I also conducted several audits related to employee safety and helped organize a "Hand Hazard Hunt."
