This initiative included identifying and acquiring majority interests in platform companies in commercial rooftop solar and enterprise energy management. I also managed Duke’s investments into the companies as well as Duke’s other distributed energy investments, including serving as the co-lead director of the solar company.

With CEO Jim Rogers, I helped manage a coalition that lobbied successfully for federal climate legislation, which passed the House of Representatives with environmental and utility industry support. I cultivated and maintained constructive relationships with key federal officials as well as NGOs, trade associations and other companies. I represented Duke in international groups and policy proceedings.

Natsource LLC was a leading provider of asset management services in global emissions and renewable energy markets. It developed and implemented some of the first and largest mechanisms to purchase environmental assets for its compliance and financial clients prior to and during the 2008 to 2012 commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol. Natsource also participated on behalf of its clients in some of the largest transactions of carbon credits created by clean development mechanism projects that occurred in the global carbon markets. I led development and funding of carbon and clean energy investment vehicles focused on emerging carbon market opportunities and secured funding from private sector investors for the vehicles. I also structured and managed equity investments into clean energy companies.

Cinergy Corporation was an Ohio-based energy company delivering electric and gas service from 1994 to 2006, with a balanced, integrated portfolio consisting of two core businesses: regulated operations and commercial businesses. In 2006, Cinergy was acquired by Duke Energy, creating one of North America’s largest energy companies with approximately $36 billion in market capitalization, assets totaling more than $70 billion, and 5.5 million retail electric and gas customers in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, North Carolina, South Carolina and Ontario, Canada.I led corporate development (M&A) and the corporate strategy group. I supported the CEO and other officers in negotiations that led to the Cinergy-Duke merger, coordinating due diligence, deal analytics and other aspects of the merger process. My department also developed analyses of new strategic and business opportunities and managed a portfolio of energy technology investments.

I also initiated independent environmental auditing of power plants, and developed and presented an annual environmental report to the Board of Directors.

The U.S. House of Representative’s Committee on Energy and Commerce writes legislation about interstate and foreign commerce, energy generation and conservation, travel and tourism, and consumer protection. I counseled ranking members John D. Dingell, Henry Waxman, and other Democratic members of the Committee regarding environmental issues and legislative proposals. I was responsible for issues including the Clean Air Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, environmental enforcement, and regulatory reform. I also developed, drafted, and assisted in legislative negotiations, including work on the Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments of 1996 and various proposed amendments to the Clean Air Act.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is an agency of the U.S. Federal government that was created for the purpose of protecting human health and the environment by writing and enforcing regulations based on laws passed by Congress.I advised EPA officials regarding a variety of Clean Air Act issues, including coal-fired power plant regulations, emissions offsets and trading, new source review and other stationary source issues. I was part of a U.S. team negotiating with Mexico regarding border air quality and other environmental issues linked to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). I also represented the EPA in negotiations within the executive branch as well as with industry, state and local governments, and environmental groups.
