About William Harmon

I have been working as a GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Specialist for the City of San Jose's Transportation Department (DOT) for the past 15 years. I currently manage and advise how GIS is used to improve efficiency by creating models of the real world.My previous work at DOT focused on supporting Intelligent Transportation and Traffic Signal Management systems. I completed several field surveys and the designs of fiber optic cable routes for intelligent transportation systems and networks used by the city. For example, in 2006 I completed a field survey and preliminary design that allowed San Jose's City Hall connect to the Central Service Yard and Happy Hollow Zoo. Prior to that I completed nearly fifty surveys, designs and reviews for traffic signal installations and modifications.For the past four years I have provided guidance to all DOT staff regarding GIS applications and their use. Projects for that I have completed include desktop and web-based mapping solutions that others can use to visualize assets and transportation networks and perform basic GIS analysis. My work is great because it covers the range from sewer and streetlight management to school safety and crash analysis. It is rewarding to work on things that people use everyday in their life. I also train people how to use GIS and teach GIS in local certificate programs; and, I get to teach Physical and Regional geography at San Jose State University (SJSU). I have also helped build curriculum for other local Geography and GIS programs.-------------Goal: I would like the opportunity for more work and teaching place and system analysis; including the opportunity for travel in the study of physical, environmental and transportation geography.However, I am also very interested Transportation GIS opportunities and have completed a Certificate in Transportation Management at SJSU's Mineta Institute in Spring 2010 (http://transweb.sjsu.edu/).Specialties: Education, lecturing, field trips, training;Civil design and review;Field work; Plan, graphic and map creation;System observation and analysis.
