About William Mccarthy

I am a PhD candidate in Cognitive Science at UC San Diego, where I investigate how people build things using tools from computational cognitive science. My research combines interactive online experiments, statistical analysis, natural language processing, and machine learning models to understand the cognitive processes that underlie generative behaviors, such as drawing, writing, block building, and computer aided design.As a graduate researcher at UC San Diego, I coordinated interdisciplinary research teams to lead scientific projects from ideation to publication. I developed and maintained a full-stack framework for running web experiments, along with numerous task interfaces for studying human collaboration in creative domains. My computational work explores the role of language during collaboration, which I hope to develop in order to build natural interfaces between human creators and AI. My goal is to develop technologies that complement our creative abilities while also allowing us to overcome cognitive limitations. I am extremely excited about the future of creative tools and a world in which everyone feels empowered to create. I would love to connect with anyone who shares this passion.
