Air quality is my business. My work addresses all aspects of air pollution, from characterizing its sources to its transit through the atmosphere to its interaction with populations and the natural and built environments. I work to understand and control criteria, toxic, and greenhouse gas pollution, with a particular emphasis on pollution related to transportation, to protect people's health and their environment. I have worked on these issues at ICF for more than 10 years. My roles have included researcher, analyst, developer, modeler, programmer, quality assurance, scientific and engineering specialist, peer review, business development, trainer, staff development, and project and contract management. I regularly perform technical modeling work for emissions inventories, pollutant dispersion, and public health risk and exposure, as well as pollution mitigation analysis. At ICF, my work often supports public policy development, including establishment of air quality standards and determining cost-effective strategies to meet those standards. My clients are in the public and private sectors. I have contributed to a wide range of projects including investigations of exposure of schoolchildren to fugitive emissions from pesticide applications, region-wide exposure to SO2 and NO2 from aggregate sources, impacts from diesel equipment operating at commercial ports, determining cost effective solutions to reduce tugboat, ocean-going vessel, and other port emissions, conducting and documenting air quality analyses for major federal (NEPA) and state (CEQA) projects, and investigating lifecycle energy, cost, and environmental sustainability aspects of alternative fuels. I also specialize in general numerical modeling, engineering, and data handling and analysis issues.

At AirFiber I served as an atmospheric specialist and systems engineer, advising sales and engineering staff on meteorological optical effects such as scintillation and attenuation and how they influenced the performance of free-space optical communications systems. To support these functions, I obtained, deployed, and maintained a network of instruments to measure relevant atmospheric properties and correlate these effects to system performance.
