The Cal Poly's Prototype Vehicles Laboratory (PROVE Lab) is a student engineering team whose mission is the development of innovative alternative energy vehicles to break world records. I was the Project Manager/ for the team's flagship vehicle: a battery-free solar-powered car designed for a land speed record attempt.PROVE Lab operated much like a startup company - fast-paced, constantly evolving, and always building. As such, my role as team leader was broad and comprehensive. - Managed a team of approximately 40 engineers- Generated and managed system requirements, from top-level mission requirements to detail design- Pushed processes and team organization with team schedules and a team-wide Kanban chart- Evaluated and approved engineering decisions, changes, and plans across all aspects of development- Created comprehensive integration plans for vehicle assembly- Designed composite laminates and tooling concepts for all composite structures- Developed manufacturing processes and best practices for composite structures, from tooling preparation to final lamination, cure, and assembly- Laminated and assembled composite vehicles structures- Supervised and documented testing, test procedures, and safety practices- Oversaw electrical integration and design: solar array, charge control units, hub motors- Managed the team's finances- Raised cash funding to support the team's efforts: $30,000 in crowdfunding and approx. $40,000 in grant money and university-related funding- Acquired and maintained sponsorships with PROVE Lab's wide network of industry suppliers and partners: over 35 companies in final sponsor list- Interfaced with various University entities and other stakeholders to secure work space and infrastructure accessFlexibility, dynamic leadership, and trust in a strong team are what have led me to success with this program.
