Project 1: A Reconfigurable Remotely Epitaxial VO2 Electrical Heterostructure• Successfully obtained free-standing 3D materials (i.e., VO2) by remote epitaxy, which enables synthesis of high crystalline transferable films and reusability of substrates.• Fabricated and electrically characterized a reconfigurable free-standing VO2 based diode with arbitrary substrates.Project 2: Room Temperature Charge-Ordered Ferroelectricity• Experimentally confirmed the charge-ordering driven ferroelectricity of an oxide which has been first predicted by theorists. • Synthesized the thin film by sputtering the self-made sputtering target, and deposited gold electrodes by E-beam evaporation.• Performed XRD, XPS, and TEM diffraction on structure, charge-ordering and ferroelastic domains characterization.Project 3: Photo-ferroelectric Based Synapses for Neuromorphic Computing• Designed an easily fabricated crossbar circuit to integrate the experimentally characterized photo-ferroelectric material as synapses in a non-volatile artificial neural network. The multi-state synapses can be written by voltage and read by light.• Applied CrossSim simulator to train a two-layer artificial neural network composed of above designed crossbar arrays and achieved a testing classification accuracy of 97.74% on the popular MNIST digit benchmark.Project 4: Unit-cell Thick Domain in Quasi-2D Ferroelectric Material• Proposed a novel design concept and an effective model system for ferroelectric devices demanding small domain size (e.g., non-volatile high density memory) based on the understanding of how quasi-2D materials structure affects the domain wall energy.• Collaborated with a computer scientist to write Python script to characterize atomic displacements in STEM images and revealed 180° ferroelectric domains down to one-unit-cell wide.Project 5: Circular Photogalvanic and Linear Photogalvanic Effect in Epitaxial Non-Stoichiometric Lead Halide Perovskite Films Heterostructure
