The Burke Lab is in its second year of a 5-year grant awarded from NASA to study the de novo emergence and evolutionary refinement of new catalytic functions in evolving RNA molecules. We aim to understand how macromolecular structure and function drive and limit emergence of catalysts that are robust that perform biologically-relevant reactions, that act in multiple-turnover fashion, and that can plug into complex systems such as existing cellular metabolisms.
