Established in 1971, The Bahamas Bar Association is the largest professional organisation in the country. With well over 1,000 attorneys, the Association works to promote, preserve, and provide regulatory oversight to the legal profession and protect the Rule of Law and the Administration of Justice in The Bahamas.
There are several components of the Bar Association:
The Bar Council, which governs the Association, appoints members of the Ethics Committee and Disciplinary Tribunal, and ensures that the Association continues to meet its obligations under the Legal Profession Act.
The Ethics Committee, which manages complaints against attorneys.
The Bar’s Administrative Office, which manages the day-to-day affairs of the Association and provides support to lawyers and the general public.
Membership in The Bahamas Bar Association is mandatory for attorneys, but limited to Bahamian citizens.
However, Attorneys of other nationalities may be Specially Admitted for particular matters or become Registered Associates if appropriately qualified.
