When injury first occurs, tissue specific macrophages initiate the inflammatory cascade by releasing cytokines into the blood stream. These inflammatory markers recruit additional macrophages to the site of injury. In chronic or deleterious forms of inflammation, these recruited macrophages arrive at the scene in M1 or “destructive” phenotype, long after necrotic tissue or pathogens are removed; causing unnecessary damage and perpetuating the cycle of inflammation.
