Centre for Opposition Studies

The Centre for Opposition Studies is an independent, non-partisan research group dedicated to the study of political opposition in the UK and other political systems. Opposition, and specifically Loyal Opposition, is a crucial part of the political system in the UK and elsewhere. The scrutiny of those in power is a fundamental principle of a free and open society, and the effectiveness of a political opposition can have a profound impact on the functioning of democracy. There is also the importance of the 'government in waiting'. It is in opposition that parties of power renew themselves and form their policy platform in preparation for when they next take office. How they do this is highly significant. Based in Westminster, the Centre for Opposition Studies exists to promote greater study of political opposition in the UK and elsewhere. We also aim to advance research into how it can be strengthened and assisted to perform its important democratic functions. We are cross-party and operate as a not-for-profit organisation.
