We aim to link the Erasmus+ programme with sustainable travel for a greener and more united Europe. We find it contradictory that the EU, which sees itself as a sustainable player, indirectly promotes air travel, because there is no sufficient support for sustainable means of travel for Erasmus+ participants. The European Green Deal is only worthwhile if the European programmes themselves become more sustainable. We believe that an extension of the Erasmus+ scholarship in the form of an Erasmus+ ticket which would cover travel to and from the Erasmus destination will lead to a significant decrease in air travel. In the meantime, we hope that this change in scholarships also sensibilizes students for sustainability issues and sustainable travel. This could further impact inter-European train connections and cooperation. In addition, we expect Erasmus by Train to provide a more wide-ranging and exciting experience of Europe. Europe and its open borders would no longer be "flown over" but rather truly experienced.
