ILSA (NUJS Chapter)

The ILSA (NUJS Chapter) is an academic society operating directly under the aegis of the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata, and the International Law Students Association. The first chapter of ILSA in India was constituted in NUJS in 2007. Since then, ILSA activities in India have intensified, and NUJS won the bid for organizing the annual conference of ILSA during the last annual conference in Bello Horizonte, Brazil. The setting up of an ILSA Chapter at NUJS was the brainchild of the 2nd Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. B.S. Chimni, a renowned scholar of International Law. The ILSA Chapter at NUJS was briefly inactive for a few years, until it was revived again in the year 2019, by Mr. Ankit Pal, then a third year student of B.A LL.B (Hons) at NUJS, under the guidance of the current Vice Chancellor of NUJS, Prof. Dr. Nirmal Kanti Chakraborty and Prof. Atul Alexander, Assistant Professor of Law at NUJS, and faculty advisor to the NUJS ILSA Chapter. In the last academic year, the society organised a series of guest lectures that were taken by globally renowned jurists of international law, such as Prof Christian J. Tams, Ms Sara K. Phillips, and Ms Federica Paddeu; facilitated a collaboration with the ILSA Chapter of another leading Indian law school, came out with the maiden newsletter of the ILSA Chapter, and for the first time, nominated a candidate from the university for the prestigious ICJ Judicial Fellowship programme.
