About MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR)
Our mission is to carry out fundamental research on viruses and viral diseases, translating the knowledge gained for the improvement of global health and benefit of society. The Centre was established in 2010 as a partnership between the University and the Medical Research Council. Over the past ten years, our research has been advancing our understanding of viruses that impact global health as well as developing a range of innovative control measures for viral diseases. Our research follows a multidisciplinary ‘molecules to populations’ approach which is designed to tackle some of the most significant viral threats to global health. Importantly our research activities are underpinned by access to an unrivalled combination of state-of-the-art facilities, technologies, infrastructure and a critical mass of dedicated world-leading expertise. We have the expertise and facilities required to support research with enables us to address the challenges we face from known and novel viruses and the diseases they cause. This includes: • functionally characterising known and novel viruses using molecular virology approaches; • handling insect vectors and infectious samples at high containment; • next generation sequencing and computational biology analyses of viral genomes; • testing of antiviral therapeutics; We work in partnership with academia, pharma, public health bodies and health delivery services, both nationally and internationally. This involves colleagues from more than 700 institutions spanning 70 countries.
