Das Institut für Mechanik und Meerestechnik der Technischen Universität Hamburg nahm am 1. Oktober 1982 unter der Leitung von Herrn Professor Dr.-Ing. Oskar Mahrenholtz seine Arbeit auf. Von 1996 bis 2012 wurde das Institut von Professor Dr.-Ing. Edwin Kreuzer geleitet. Seit 1. Oktober 2014 ist Professor Dr.-Ing. Robert Seifried Leiter des Instituts. Wichtige Arbeitsgebiete seit der Gründung des Instituts sind die Strukturmechanik im Allgemeinen unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Fluid-Struktur-Wechselwirkungen. Im Laufe der Jahre kamen weitere Forschungsgebiete hinzu, im Speziellen die Mehrkörperdynamik, aktive und autonome Systeme, Kontaktmechanik und Strukturoptimierung.
