About OCCAM Project

OCCAM is a pioneering project dedicated to advancing climate change adaptation and mitigation solutions for the aquaculture sector across Europe. Coordinated by Nofima, our consortium brings together 22 partners from research institutes, universities, industry leaders, and technology platforms, all committed to developing innovative, scalable, and sustainable measures to enhance the resilience and environmental performance of aquaculture production systems. Our mission is to operationalize climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies for aquaculture, ensuring sustainable, productive, and competitive aquaculture systems that contribute to global food security and environmental sustainability. Our objectives include developing and deploying cutting-edge technologies and methodologies to address climate-related challenges in aquaculture, promoting practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impact, fostering a circular economy within the aquaculture industry, enhancing the adaptive capacity of aquaculture systems to withstand and thrive amidst climate change impacts, and engaging with stakeholders across the aquaculture value chain, including farmers, industry associations, policymakers, and researchers, to co-create and implement effective solutions. OCCAM employs a multi-actor approach, integrating social sciences and natural sciences to develop solutions that are not only technically feasible but also socially acceptable and economically viable. Our work is structured around eight work packages, focusing on climate forecasting, adaptation and mitigation solutions, environmental and socio-economic assessments, communication, dissemination, and exploitation of results. OCCAM is a four-year project funded under Horizon Europe, dedicated to driving innovation and sustainability in the aquaculture sector.
