RO-CCC: Advancing Romania's Semiconductor Capabilities
The Romanian Centre of Competence in Smart Systems for Sensing and Robotics (RO-SMARTSYS) is strengthening Romania's role in Europe's semiconductor ecosystem. This initiative tackles urgent challenges from increasing semiconductor demand across healthcare, automotive, and industrial automation sectors. Working in alignment with the European Chips Act, RO-SMARTSYS enhances Europe's digital sovereignty through expanded R&D capabilities, SME support, and improved access to advanced design and manufacturing infrastructure.
At its heart, RO-SMARTSYS establishes a comprehensive Competence Centre providing national and European stakeholders – including SMEs, academic institutions, and research organizations – with access to state-of-the-art expertise, pilot production lines, design platforms, and specialized semiconductor training. The Centre serves as a crucial gateway to both national and European resources, delivering technology transfer services, skills development programs, and practical training in micro-nanotechnology, robotics, and smart systems integration.
The project implements a methodical work plan supporting advanced semiconductor solution development across industries while promoting EU-wide collaboration through the network of Competence Centres. By addressing critical gaps in infrastructure, workforce skills, and innovation capacity, RO-SMARTSYS reduces Europe's reliance on imported semiconductors, strengthens digital supply chains, and accelerates digital and green transitions in accordance with EU strategic priorities.
Furthermore, the initiative drives awareness through strategic communication activities, ensuring widespread stakeholder participation and facilitating the transformation of technological breakthroughs into market-ready innovations.
