Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) was launched in December 2014 by HH Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. Its mandate includes growing investment in creative industries, building a global platform for culture and knowledge exchange, and highlighting the importance of books in today's digitally driven world, especially in context of rapid technological changes. The authority aims to attract relevant bodies and figures operating in the cultural sector around the world to support book publishing, printing, translation and documentation in particular. The SBA has jurisdiction over several important cultural projects in the UAE, including Sharjah Publishing City, the very first publishing free zone in the Arab World. The authority is also responsible for Sharjah Public Libraries in Sharjah; the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) - the fourth largest in the world; Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival; and the Translation Grant. SBA also organises the Publishers Conference, which is the first free training programme for publishers in the Arab World, and is also responsible for an annual joint conference with the American Library Association. انطلقت هيئة الشارقة للكتاب في عام 2014 بموجب مرسوم أميري أصدره صاحب السمو الشيخ الدكتور سلطان بن محمد القاسمي. وتعمل الهيئة على تشجيع الاستثمار في الصناعات الإبداعية وزيادة حصتها، وتوفير منصة فكرية للتبادل المعرفي والفكري والثقافي بين الشعوب والحضارات والثقافات، والتأكيد على أهمية الكتاب وأثره في نشر الوعي بالمجتمع في ظل التطور التقني وتنوع مصادر المعرفة، واستقطاب المعنيين بقطاع الثقافة بوجه عام والنشر والطباعة والترجمة والتوثيق بوجه خاص إضافةً إلى كُتّاب الأطفال وتشرف هيئة الشارقة للكتاب على عدد من المشاريع الثقافية المهمة في دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة، من بينها مدينة الشارقة للنشر، والمكتبات العامة في إمارة الشارقة، ومعرض الشارقة الدولي للكتاب، ومهرجان الشارقة القرائي للطفل، ومنحة الترجمة
