SPAB Ireland

The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) is Britain’s oldest building conservation charity and has around 8,500 members. Founded by William Morris in 1877 to combat destructive Victorian enthusiasm for restoration rather than repair, today SPAB continues to offer advice, education and expertise to building professionals and homeowners. In early 2017 a group of Irish SPAB Scholars and Fellows joined together to form SPAB Ireland. SPAB Ireland is newest branch of the SPAB, and is an active and friendly community that aims to protect and promote the wonderful national built heritage on the whole island of Ireland. We also run a variety of workshops and campaigns throughout the year for building professionals and homeowners. These are targeted to reflect current issues and themes of interest to those caring for historic buildings. SPAB Ireland has its own committee, which is currently consists of 14 members. SPAB Ireland is always looking for new volunteers to get involved in activities so don't hesitate to get in touch if you'd like to take part. SPAB campaigns against threats to historic buildings. SPAB is the champion of the building, representing the practical and positive side of conservation, with a firm set of principles about how old buildings should be repaired and the practical knowledge to demonstrate how these principles should be applied.
