About Thorndon Chambers
Thorndon Chambers was founded in 1994 by Terence Arnold, who was joined at the outset by Lindsay McKay and Francis Cooke. Over the past 25 years, our members have included some of the leading advocates at the New Zealand Bar, many of whom have taken silk. A number of former members have also been appointed to the Bench. Thorndon Chambers’ origins are firmly rooted in public and commercial law. Our current members are recognised specialists in all areas of public, commercial and international law. Members are regularly instructed on high profile litigation, appearing as advocates before the courts, specialist tribunals, and arbitral tribunals in New Zealand and around the world, as well as serving on or assisting commissions of inquiry. Thorndon Chambers is committed to the fundamental principles of the rule of law and the independence of the Bar. Our members take their ethical responsibilities seriously and contribute to various New Zealand Law Society, New Zealand Bar Association and law reform initiatives. They also promote access to justice by undertaking legal aid or pro bono work where appropriate. Thorndon Chambers has a proud tradition of having female barristers who have become leaders in the profession, taking silk, being appointed to the Bench, or going onto distinguished careers in the public service. Thorndon Chambers has now had four female silks as members, beginning with the late Helen Aikman QC (2005) and Karen Clark QC (2007). Thorndon Chambers is fully committed to the principle of equality of opportunity without discrimination on the grounds of sex, age, colour, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, disability, religion, or political persuasion.
