University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences is a flag bearer of excellence in Pharmaceutical education and research in the country. The Department was established in Lahore in 1944 and got re-located on the campus of Panjab University, Chandigarh in 1959. More than 1800 graduates, almost 1200 Postgraduates and 230 Ph.Ds are the proud alumni of the institute. Currently, the institute has 192 B. Pharm., 110 M. Pharm., more than 43 Ph.D research scholars, 04 post docs and 03 research associates. Every year the students show impeccable results by bagging top ranks in National level exams like GPAT & NIPER–JEE. The par-excellence literary and research wealth of the institute includes more than 63 textbooks, compendia, 55 monographs in the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India and around 3400 research publications. Institute has to its credit 38 granted and 59 filed patent applications, along with 08 successfully transferred indigenous technologies to industries and 05 products in the market. The faculty is bestowed with numerous national and international awards, and meritorious recognitions. The institute is proud of its rich diaspora of alumni who adorn the highest echelons in industry, research organizations and academia in India and abroad. In 2017, UIPS witnessed a tectonic moment, when Padma Shri, the highest national honor, was bestowed upon Late Prof. Harkishan Singh ji (Emeritus Professor); in recognition of his outstanding contribution and achievements in the field of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Prof. Singh is credited with the discovery of a clinically useful skeletal muscle relaxant Candocuronium iodide, the only drug discovered by any Indian University till date. Institute has a well-established “The Panjab University Pharmaceutical Society” i.e. PUPS to promote academic, social and cultural activities for the students.
