Urban Reef

Instead of trying to eliminate unpredictability, Urban Reef makes use of it. The unpredictable behaviour of climate change, rain showers, urban densification and biodiversity call for adaptive, open-ended solutions. We see the city as one, living ‘reef’ stimulating water circularity, climate adaptation and biodiversity. By designing with local humidity, temperature and sunlight we shape unique microclimates for all types of life. The shapes are 3D printed with organic, (living) materials. Urban Reef adapts to the situation. It stores water and distributes this slowly, grows into an ecosystem and informs citizens of its ever changing state. Through an interactive game, the objects can be followed and even cared for.
