Varuboden-Oslan historia on vielä lyhyt, aloittihan osuuskauppa toimintansa kombinaatiofuusion myötä vasta niinkin äskettäin kuin 1.7.2011. Molemmilla fuusion osapuolilla, Osuuskunta Varubodenilla ja Osuuskauppa Oslalla, on kuitenkin tahoillaan pitkät ja vaiheikkaat historiansa. Varuboden-Oslan juuret ulottuvat aina vuoteen 1889, jolloin työntekijät Borgströmin tupakkatehtaalla perustivat Helsingin yleisen kulutusyhdistyksen. 6.5.1921 yhdistyksen 13 kauppaa siirtyivät Osuuskunta Varubodenin omistukseen. Osuuskunta Varuboden piti itsellään 7 kauppaa ja myi 5 Helsingin Osuuskaupalle ja yhden Elannolle. Tämän perusteella Varuboden-Oslan voidaankin tulkita olevan jopa Suomen vanhin osuuskauppa.
