Currently I am studying Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management - BSc (Hons) at Ulster University on a Part-Time basis while working for esc construction consultants, Belfast. My career has seen me start out as an apprentice plumber working on construction sites throughout Northern Ireland. It is here that my passion for working in the construction industry started. I saw first-hand buildings going from substructure level to fully operational. This has helped me have competent knowledge of construction technology which has helped me academically and within my current role. Upon completion of my Level 2 and 3 NVQ qualification in plumbing I decided that I would enrol on a Foundation Degree in Sustainable Construction, by doing this course it made me think what route i should take within the construction industry and I gained employment through South West College as a Higher-Level Apprentice. In this role I assisted the Project Sponsor on the day to day running of a 30 million pound construction project. During this period, I gained the experience of attending meetings, Project, Board and Advisory groups. It also gave me experience with the financial side of a construction project which has led me down the route of Quantity Surveying. I am now into the last year of my undergraduate degree (studying part-time) and the knowledge I have gained in my previous roles has helped me significantly to get this point. My ambitions for the future are to gain as much experience as possible in a professional environment while completing my undergraduate degree and work my way to my Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) and become a Chartered Quantity Surveyor.
