Responsibilities:• Remotely lead team of seven Systems Engineers operating servers and services in AWS to support Amplify's 1-to-1 in-classroom tablet initiative.• Work with engineering teams at all phases of development to design services that can be effectively operated by the Systems Engineering team.• Serve as resident database performance and design expert suggesting performance improvements by way of server tuning, SQL optimization, and indexing. • Handle day-to-day people management duties including weekly 1-on-1s and performance reviews. Responsibilities:Remotely led team of four Systems Engineers located in three countries in operation of a high traffic flash sales website developed in Rails. Responsible for configuration, scaling, monitoring, backups, and troubleshooting of over 250 virtual and physical servers in both EC2 and traditional data center environments.Key Accomplishments:•Resolved complex MySQL locking issues causing production stalls and impacting important business operations. •Developed rstatsd, a regular expression-based, multi-threaded metric collection utility that extracts metrics from shell commands to be sent to StatsD. •Developed unattended server spinup and backup tools for Amazon EC2 using puppet and Ruby. •Developed carbios, a connector to feed Nagios Performance Data into Graphite/Carbon. •Planned and executed complete production data center migration with minimal downtime. •Performed complex database cutover from internal finance and inventory system to commercial ERP solution. •Implemented Cloudera Flume logging solution to stream large volumes of user analytic data into S3 for Hadoop/Elastic Map Reduce analysis. •Set up Splunk to handle all production logs and trained internal users on usage. •Performed CDN benchmarks before choosing providers resulting in improved site performance and reduced monthly costs. •Assisted Development and Data Science teams with query optimizations and educated personnel on MySQL best practices. •Built out VPC in Amazon EC2 that integrates with all data centers and offices via mesh VPN. •Resolved nightly Riak outage due to I/O saturation by offsetting bitcask merge windows. •Maintained MongoDB, Riak, and memcached clusters.

Developed user interface, design tools, and web applications in a proprietary scripting language for a RDE database application. Designed and implemented software to dynamically generate HTML pages driven by SQL data-sources. Implemented a network sockets API, resulting in the development of a Web Application Server product that changed the direction and focus of the company and dramatically increased sales. Manually scripted an ETL process to migrate data from a MySQL-based 8-year-old bulletin board software to vBulletin. Successfully worked remotely from a home office for several years before relocating and working in-house. Efficiently worked in a small, geographically diverse development team where individual contributions were delivered on time and well tested. Managed several development projects and integrated the results from a small team of programmers. Configured, administered, and supported a 5000 user corporate message board.

Provided hands-on technical support for a multi-platform network of 250 workstations and 20 Windows servers in a 24/7 production environment. Designed, implemented, and troubleshooted network upgrades from a 10-BASE-T and ThinNet environment to 100-BASE-TX over a fiber backbone with no downtime for the Production Department.
