About Adam Williamson
Adam Williamson is a Senior Principal Quality Engineer at Red Hat. He possess expertise in open source, linux, redhat, management, fedora and 14 more skills. Colleagues describe him as "I knew Adam when he was only a contributor to the Mandriva Community, and his great work to advocate the product and to help improving it eventually allowed him to be hired. His work was remarkable in numerous ways, from technical development to communication strategy. Moreover, Adam was working remotely in a different timezone, which makes his great contribution even more impressive." and "Is it possible to limit Adam's work in a certain area? Presumably not. The most visible part of his tremendous work comes from his commitment in accompanying the Mandriva community to step up in discovering the distribution. To name some of his actions: - helping people on the forums, - keeping tight contacts between users encountering problems and developpers at the company, - creating and managing the "triage/bug team" which ensures the bug reports are baby-sitted in order to provide both the user and the developer a rapid and efficient help, - ensuring the quality level of packages was good enough so each package could be installed and used (this is a huge work) - help in ensuring the distribution standards raised up in quality (that what really obvious in 2008 and 2008.1 releases), - to summarize, he gave the impression he had a '10 day-work' day, his working capabilities are very high above the average. That said, one cannot limit Adam's work to an excellent engineer activity. In fact he also did a tremendous lobbying for the open source community, not only for Mandriva, and helped a lot the company to get more visibility from the English-speaking users. Adam really deserves a lot for what he has already done and i'm sure he will find rapidly another job where his expert skills (as engineer but also as a very good communicator) will be appreciated rapidly. So bad we loose you for Mandriva but very best wishes for the future. Stéphane"

Adam Williamson work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Principal Quality Engineer
I continue to act as team lead and acted as community manager till mid 2016, when I gave up the community role to other team members in order to focus on other work. I am currently the main QA contact for the distribution release process and handle various tasks related to that (managing blocker bugs, co-ordinating with release engineering, and so on). I also maintain Fedora's openQA packages, the Fedora openQA instances, tests and infrastructure, and several other miscellaneous packages and infrastructure pieces. I also continue to do manual testing and (especially) root causing.
Senior Software Engineer
I worked on the Fedora QA team at Red Hat, initially as community manager, working to continually improve community engagement with Fedora QA. Over time I took on additional responsibilities, and from 2012 to 2014 was the team lead while the team had no direct manager, meaning I co-ordinated the staff Red Hat has assigned specifically to QA for the Fedora distribution and ensured that all the team's goals were achieved and schedules met. Since mid 2014 the team has a manager, but I continued with some team lead responsibilities, working together with the team manager.
Community Rep / Bugmaster / Newsletter Editor / Proofreader / Translator / Packager
I had several different roles at Mandriva. As community manager, I was the main contact point between the company and the end-user community, including lots of work in the Mandriva forums and elsewhere communicating the concerns of each party to the other. As Bugmaster I was responsible for the content of the Bugzilla system, making sure bugs are appropriately triaged and handled. I also tracked release-critical bugs during release cycles. In PR terms, I wrote the newsletter, proofread and translated press releases, and handled most communication with community news sites. As a maintainer / packager I was responsible for several important components of the distribution, including Tcl / Tk, the main Bittorrent clients (Deluge and Transmission), amsn, WebKit, and the graphics card driver hardware mapping database. I also maintained over a hundred other packages.
Field Support Representative
I held two separate positions at Shaw, a Canadian cable TV and internet company. As a field support representative I worked in an office environment providing logistical support to field engineers. This mostly involved making changes to customer accounts that were necessary for whatever work the field engineer was doing, such as activating new equipment or services. It also involved booking appointments and taking calls from customers when engineers were late for appointments. As a customer service representative in the AUP department, which involved communicating with customers who were breaking the Acceptable Use Policy on their internet connections, by running unauthorized services or transferring excessive amounts of data. This involved both communication skills in order to communicate concerns and resolve problems with sometimes irate customers, and also technical skills in order to be able to identify and help resolve the causes of excessive connection use.
Administrator
I worked on a temporary contract as an administrator, prior to moving to Canada. I had a variety of responsibilities including scheduling inspections, editing and despatching inspection reports, contacting homes about complaints and urgent compliance issues, and other miscellaneous administrative support tasks for the inspection team. I introduced new working methods and techniques, such as improved use of the task sharing facilities in Outlook. I used my knowledge of Excel to create combined inspection schedules and self-assessment tools which were appreciated by my colleagues.
