I assisted in the conduction of clinical research on brain mechanisms of neurological disorders such as Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder. I aided in the preparation, and operation of the EEG equipment, as well as the analysis of the EEG and EMG data, which includes proficiency in various computer software programs such as EMSE and Excel. I also performed personal patient interview questionnaires, and assisted in administering CMINDS tests.

I assisted nurses with the direct care of patients,by helping patients with essential activities such as bathing, eating, getting dressed, and going to the bathroom. I also provided patients with assistance with nonessential activities, such as reading to them, providing emotional support, and ensuring they (and their visitors) were as comfortable as possible during their hospital stay. I was also able to assist the staff in triaging patients, hooking them up to heart monitors and recording EKGs. I maintained a clean and organized working environment by filing papers,cleaning rooms, wiping down workspaces and equipment, and keeping supplies well stocked and in their designated location. I transported laboratory specimens, such as blood tests, lab cultures, and tissues from surgery, to the proper departments. With my experience here, I gained familiarity with multiple hospital floors, such as Med-Surg, the E.R. and the O.R., I acquired an extensive lexicon of medical terminology and equipment, and most importantly, I learned how beneficial and important it is for a health-care professional to develop a genuine relationship with their patients.

In this program, I had the opportunity to work alongside the healthcare providers in addressing the needs of patients beyond the realm of medicine. Because many of the clinic's patients were lower income and Spanish-speaking only, they were lacking in many resources that both directly and indirectly affected their health; such as food ,clothes or even shelter. I helped connect these patients with resources throughout the community to meet their individual needs. To ensure they were helped sufficiently, I would follow up with them periodically. I was able to not only practice my colloquial Spanish and hone in clinical interpersonal skills, but I was also able to develop long-lasting relationships with patients while serving my community.
