Alexa Metallic is a proud L'nusgw (Mi'gmaq woman) from Listuguj Mi'gmaq First Nation. She currently serves as the Policy and Research Coordinator for Indigenous Climate Action (ICA), an Indigenous-led organization empowering communities to reclaim their roles as leaders in achieving climate justice.Before joining ICA, Alexa worked as the Strategic Partnerships and Outreach Coordinator at the Ulnooweg Education Center (UEC), and as the Cultural Sensitivity Coordinator at the Joint Economic Development Initiative (JEDI).Outside her professional life, Alexa is a passionate artist, a jingle dress dancer, a dedicated Mi'gmaq language learner, and, most importantly, a proud auntie.She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Public Policy from St. Thomas University, where she was actively involved in Indigenous advocacy and reconciliation efforts. She served as the University’s Chair of Indigenous Reconciliation Committee, the Indigenous Student Representative, and a Board Member for STU’s Senate on Reconciliation.She received her Master of Arts in Indigenous Governance in 2024 from the University of Victoria. Her SSHRC-awarded research explores the rematriation of Mi'gmaq narratives, stories, and worldviews, addressing how translation and transliteration into English may have influenced their original meanings. This work is deeply rooted in her conversations with Mi'gmaq grandmothers and linguists, emphasizing community-centered approaches to language revitalization.
