Alex Barker is a museum-based archaeologist with fieldwork in the American Southeast, Eastern Europe and the Aegean. He is immediate past president of the American Anthropological Association. In 2022 he was appointed by President Biden to the national Cultural Property Advisory Committee.Barker is past president of the Council for Museum Anthropology, served on the Board of Directors of the Society for American Archaeology and as SAA Treasurer, and as Convener of the 40 professional and scholarly organizations comprising the American Anthropological Association Section Assembly. From 2011-2015 he was a Secretarial appointee to the federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation National Review Committee.Barker previously chaired the Committee on Ethics of the Society for American Archaeology, the Committee on Ethics of the American Anthropological Association, and served on the Task Force for Comprehensive Ethics Review of the AAA, as well as the American Association of Museums' Task Force on Cultural Property, which developed guidelines for the ethical acquisition of antiquities by US museums.He is an elected Expert Member of the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Archaeology and Heritage Management (ICAHM), and of the ICOMOS ISC on Earthen Architectural Heritage (ICEAH), and an Associate Member of the IC on Legal, Administrative and Financial Issues (ICLAFI).
