For twenty-five years I have worked for the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, the non-profit that owns and operates Monticello. My work began with research and writing for an exhibition and catalog celebrating the 250th anniversary of Thomas Jefferson’s birth: The Worlds of Thomas Jefferson at Monticello (Abrams, 1993). As Director of Research I supervised a small library staff charged with responding to inquiries from Monticello’s staff, visiting scholars, and the public at large. Over the years I have collaborated with colleagues in the production of several publications, exhibitions, and web sites. Research I conducted for the annotation of Thomas Jefferson’s Granddaughter in Queen Victoria’s England: The Travel Diary of Ellen Wayles Coolidge, 1838-1839, led to the remarkable discovery of a lost portion of Jefferson’s library, including the architectural volumes he used when designing the University of Virginia. In my present position in Monticello’s development office I unite Monticello's supporters with our scholarly staff.
